MILLER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WINS $25,000 TECHNOLOGY MAKEOVER GRAND PRIZE

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP - The future is looking bright for Dr. Joyanne D. Miller Elementary School thanks to a small group of fifth graders who learned that six heads are better than one.

The students succeeded in creating a three-pronged grand prize-winning presentation that

answered the $25,000 question: “What Will School Look Like In The Future?” and scored their school a technology makeover in the process.

Facilitated by teachers Kelly Hunt and Susan Slusarski, the winning proposal was designed

and submitted by students Jason DeNafo, Ben Gettings, Madison Gladney, Brianna LaChina, Ana Mytnik and Steve Slusarski.

The presentation featured an Academic Assistance Wristband which would be technology-infused and linked to each student's academic schedule; virtual Grade-Level Glasses that replace books and allow for real-time virtual interaction with a 3-dimensional teacher and the subject matter; and a Student Learning Assistant Lenovo holographic tablet, which would link to and integrate with the other two technologies and project the lessons right at the student’s desk.

The Lenovo Future Academy Traveling Storybook contest challenges students across the country from elementary through high school to use a Lenovo-provided computer to submit futuristic proposals. Stories were evaluated on originality and creativity. The top 10 submissions were chosen to have their stories professionally animated. Then, a nationwide vote was held to determine the Grand Prize winner.

"Out of all the submissions, your school’s story for the future of education blew us — and

the voters — away," a Lenovo representative wrote in an email to Hunt announcing the win. "We simply couldn’t stop watching! Everyone involved in the project should be proud of their submission — the Grand Prize is well-deserved."

“We are grateful to Lenovo for providing our students with this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Hunt. “It definitely challenged  them to learn new technologies and pushed their creativity to a heightened level, which they will never forget,” she added.

“The students worked so hard on this project and  I know I also speak for my co-teacher, Susan Slusarski, in saying that we are so proud of them," Hunt said. "We also want to thank everyone who voted for our video. We definitely couldn't have won this without the fantastic community support."
